Airport strikes could go on for months

Image
The head of the PCS union said that UK Airport strikes by Border Force workers could last for months if the government doesn’t discuss pay. Mark Serwotka said that walkouts were “mandated” by the union until May. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he was “sad” about the trouble that airport strikes were causing, but he said that he had acted “fairly and reasonably” regarding public sector pay. Thousands of travelers coming to the UK were warned to expect delays, but there have been a few problems. As the Christmas vacation picked up speed, the AA said that some places had “severe congestion” on the roads. It said that rail strikes, which were set to end on Saturday, had caused more cars to be on the road and that accidents on the M1 and flooding on the M25 had caused big traffic jams. Around 1,000 Border Force workers, many of whom check passports, are going on strike from Friday to December 26 and from December 28 to December 31. This is the first of a series of strikes lasting unt...

Musk to quit as Twitter CEO soon

Image
Elon Musk has said that he will step down in his role as CEO of Twitter when he finds someone “stupid enough to take the job.” The billionaire had said he would follow the result of a Twitter poll, in which 57.5% of people voted “yes” to him leaving the job. He says that even after his replacement is found, he will still be in charge of the software and server teams. Since he took over, many people have said bad things about the changes to the platform. Since October, when Mr. Musk bought the social media site, he has fired about half of its employees and tried to roll out Twitter’s paid-for verification feature before pausing it. Last week, the feature was brought back. Civil liberties groups have also criticized his way of moderating content, saying that he is doing things that will lead to more hate speech and false information. After repeatedly trying to back out of the deal, Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion (£36 billion) in October. Since he took over, his approach to con...

UAE: How they got a spacecraft to Mars

Image
The UAE’s space agency sent its first mission to Mars in 2020, less than ten years after it was set up. So how did they pull it off? On July 19, 2020, a few months after a global pandemic had paralyzed the world, a rocket took off from Tanegashima, a small island in the south of Japan. On board was a small spaceship just over 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide, weighing about the same as a Ford Focus car. It had many important cameras and spectrometers on board for its upcoming mission, which would take more than 493 million km (306 million miles) from Earth. On top of its gold body was a big black radio antenna that would send its data across the vast, cold void of space to controllers sitting at their monitors. The name of the spaceship was “Hope.” However, it wasn’t from the United States, Russia, or the European Union. Instead, Hope was the first spacecraft from the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) to go further than an orbit around the Earth. If it works, it will be the first...

TikTok: U.S. Introduce Bills to Ban App

Image
Concerns about national security have led some U.S. lawmakers to call for a ban on the social media app TikTok, known for its short viral videos. The bill is the latest thing the U.S. government has done against the company owned by the Chinese tech giant ByteDance. Last month, the head of the FBI said he was worried that China could use the app to change people’s minds or take control of their devices. Because of this, it is not allowed on government devices in several U.S. states. But the bill has a hard time passing. TikTok, which has more than 100 million users in the U.S., said that the measure was a politically-motivated ban that won’t help with U.S. national security. As part of the national security review that started when Donald Trump was president, the company said it was making plans “that we are well on our way to implementing” to make the platform in the U.S. even safer. Congress officially introduced a bill to ban TikTok in the U.S. Republican Sen. Marco Rubio is l...

Amazon Warns After Slow Sales Bites

Image
Concerns over Amazon and Apple’s upcoming profitability have increased as the digital titans have warned that the worsening global economy is hurting their sales. After the US stock market closed, Amazon shares fell more than 15% after the company lowered its holiday season sales projections. After a warning about waning demand for games and advertising, Apple shares also fell. Both mentioned how declining consumer purchasing power results from growing living expenses. Brian Olsavsky, the chief financial officer of Amazon, invited analysts to a conference call to discuss the results. He acknowledged the current state of the economy while being upbeat about the holiday. The company’s founder, Jeff Bezos, recently advised investors to “batten down the hatches” in light of recent economic warning signs. Even Apple, one of the most reliable tech behemoths, was not immune. Winter of Unhappiness Apple said in its update on Thursday that sales increased by 8% to $90.1 billion in the three mon...

Meta Threatens to Remove US News Content

Image
Meta has said that it might take news stories off Facebook in the US. It is against a new law that would make it simpler for news organizations to negotiate fees for the content shared on Facebook. When Australia passed a law like this last year, it took down news on Facebook for a short time. Meta says that its platform helps struggling news sites get more visitors. It says publishers put their work on Facebook because “it helps them make money.” Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota introduced the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) to the congress. Both Democrats and Republican members of the congress supported the bill. It would give publishers and broadcasters more power to ask social media companies for a more significant cut of ad revenue as a group. Media companies say that Meta makes money from the news articles people share on the site. During the pandemic, the local news struggled, while Meta made a lot of money. Meta says, though, that this story is wrong....

Black Panther Rules Domestically and Globally

Image
Black Panther Wakanda Forever from Marvel was the most popular movie in the United States when it opened. It made $180 million over the weekend, a big boost for struggling theaters. The sequel broke the record for a movie coming out in November in North America. It beat the $158 million record set by “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” in 2013. In addition, the superhero adventure made an impressive $330 million worldwide, with $150 million coming from 55 markets outside the United States. But its success has a bittersweet side to it. That’s because the people who made the sequel had to deal with a shocking tragedy before filming began. When Chadwick Boseman, the actor who gave “Black Panther” a lot of its heart, died of cancer in 2020. He had just turned 43. In response, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was changed into a tribute to the late actor by the film’s director and co-writer, Ryan Coogler. In the movie, the kingdom of Wakanda is trying to deal with the death of King T’Challa....
