Meta Threatens to Remove US News Content

Meta has said that it might take news stories off Facebook in the US. It is against a new law that would make it simpler for news organizations to negotiate fees for the content shared on Facebook. When Australia passed a law like this last year, it took down news on Facebook for a short time. Meta says that its platform helps struggling news sites get more visitors. It says publishers put their work on Facebook because “it helps them make money.”

Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota introduced the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA) to the congress. Both Democrats and Republican members of the congress supported the bill.

It would give publishers and broadcasters more power to ask social media companies for a more significant cut of ad revenue as a group.

Media companies say that Meta makes money from the news articles people share on the site. During the pandemic, the local news struggled, while Meta made a lot of money. Meta says, though, that this story is wrong. It says instead that Meta brings people to news sources.

A spokesperson for Meta, said, “If Congress passes a bad journalism bill as part of a national security bill. We will have to think about taking news off of our platform altogether.”
Less Revenue

Meta also says that sharing news on Facebook doesn’t bring in much money.

When a similar law was enacted in Australia in March 2021, news feeds were shut down for a short time in that country. After getting a lot of bad feedback, the company quickly changed its mind and negotiated a deal with the Australian government.

Last year, a spokesperson for Meta said this about the proposed law in Australia: “The news won’t help Facebook’s business much, if at all.
